Swarthmore College is a private, independent, liberal arts college in Swarthmore, which is a borough in Delaware County, in the US state of Pennsylvania, with more than 6000 people, living within its limits, at the time of the 2000 census.
The college was established in 1864 and was founded by a committee of Quakers who were members of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Baltimore Yearly Meeting and New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.
It presently offers its students `more than 600 courses a year and more than 50 courses of study; an exceptional honors program; individual special majors; a program in education that leads to Pennsylvania secondary school certification; and undergraduate research opportunities in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and engineering.`
Swarthmore's athletic teams are nicknamed the Garnet(s) and they compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the Centennial Conference, at the NCAA Division III level, with 22 varsity intercollegiate men's and women's sports teams. Their distinctive colors are garnet, gray, and white.
Among the noteworthy alumni, produced by Swarthmore College, there are also: Nancy Roman - NASA's first Chief of Astronomy in the Office of Space Science, `mother of the Hubble telescope`, Robert Zoellick - president of the World Bank, and John C. Mather - American astrophysicist, cosmologist, and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate for his work on COBE with George Smoot.
